World Diabetes Day: supporting people with diabetes to live well

Today we join the rest of the world to recognise World Diabetes Day, created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) and the World Health Organisation. The IDF reports that of the 537 million people living with diabetes worldwide, 36% experience diabetes distress, 63% fear developing diabetes-related complications, and 28% find it hard to remain positive in relation to their condition, and so this year, World Diabetes Day calls for the prioritisation of well-being in diabetes care.

Here at VHUK, we are committed to leveraging technology to help people with diabetes feel more informed and in control of their condition and care. One of the ways we do this is through the provision of Diamond, our innovative diabetes care management solution.

Diamond’s suite of digital tools gives clinicians access to real-time information at the point of patient care. Utilised as a specialist Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, Diamond consolidates data from multiple sources in a single view, ensuring that multi-disciplinary diabetes care teams have access to complete and accurate patient data, which can also include up-to-date lab results. Diabetes patients can be reassured that the team supporting them has a holistic view of their health, as well as the information they need to make safe and informed decisions about their care.

Diamond also has a number of education tools that can enhance patients’ knowledge about their condition and treatment, as well as help them feel more supported, beyond the traditional hospital environment. The platform’s integration with provider patient administration systems can lead to other benefits that improve the patient experience, such as easier check-ins and reduced appointment errors.

Our dedication to supporting people with diabetes also extends to our corporate social responsibility commitments. Every year, our Corporate Social Responsibility Committee invites the VHUK staff team to nominate a charity they would like us to support for 12 months. This year, the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation (DRWF) was one of three carefully selected corporate charity partners.

DRWF raises awareness of all types of diabetes and associated complications; the charity provides information and support to promote good self-management and to enhance quality of life, whilst funding vital diabetes research to establish the causes, prevention and treatment of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, develop improved management and treatment options, and ultimately find a cure.

Our team aims to amplify the vital support DWRF and our other charity partners provide, as well as raise as much money as possible for their incredible work; fundraising began in February at our Annual Staff Seminar, with £4,076.10 raised by the VitalHub UK team from our raffle and auction.

Together, we can help put well-being at the heart of diabetes care.
